Console Log — Day v3

Every command and output from the command-and-control test run: calculator, dictionary, thesaurus, memopad, weather, memory, oracle, key auth. Dictionary/thesaurus fell back to the local word list (the dictionary API fetch did not return a usable entry); weather ran live off wttr.in.

$ what is a 2400 baud modem

[local] (5 t/s)
The 2400 Baud Modem

Before broadband, before dial-up at 56k, there was the 2400 baud modem.
2400 baud meant 2400 bits per second — roughly 240 characters per
second, about as fast as a person can read out loud. A page of text
took seconds. A file took minutes. A big file took a phone call you
did not want to pay for.

The 2400 baud modem spoke V.22bis. You dialed with Hayes AT commands:
ATDT and the number, then the handshake — the clicks, the tones, the
hiss settling into carrier. When it connected, the modem printed
CONNECT 2400 and you were in.

We used a Commodore 64. The modem plugged into the user port or a
cartridge interface, and the terminal program turned the TV into a
window onto another computer. 2400 baud felt fast after 300. It felt
like the future. It was the speed at which the BBS world ran, and
the BBS world was the whole online world we had. [memory_source=library]

$ what is a bbs

$ oracle: what is an intel 80386dx40

[oracle +learned] (0 t/s)
Intel 80386DX40. A 32-bit x86 microprocessor clocked at 40 MHz. The "DX" designation means a full 32-bit data and address bus—4GB addressable memory, native protected-mode multitasking, the definitive step up from the 16-bit 286. Late-80s silicon; the speed king of the 386 line before the 486 usurped it. No MMX, no superscalar—just straight 32-bit iron at 40MHz.
